Everything You Need To Know About Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a health condition that everyone's talking about.
Your risk of developing metabolic syndrome increases as you age. There are over 1.5 million new cases yearly in Nigeria.
Indeed, metabolic syndrome seems to be a condition that many people have, but no one knows very much about.
Understanding Metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions from the same root cause (metabolic disorder) that increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, some cancers even sudden death (cardiac death).
What causes Metabolic diseases/disorders?
Metabolism is the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat. Food is made up of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Chemicals in your digestive system break the food parts down into sugars and acids, your body's fuel.
Your body can use this fuel right away, or it can store the energy in your body tissues, such as your liver, muscles, and body fat.
A metabolic disorder occurs when abnormal chemical reactions in your body disrupt this process. When this happens, you might have too much of some substances or too little of other ones that you need to stay healthy.
You can develop a metabolic disorder when some organs, such as your liver or pancreas, become diseased or do not function normally.
What causes abnormal reactions of these body chemicals?
Inflammation caused by Overweight/Obesity.
Obesity is generally caused by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy, particularly fat and sugars, but do not burn off the energy through enough exercise or physical activities, much of the surplus energy will be stored by the body as fat.
The more your fatty tissues the higher Body Mass Index (BMI) the higher your blood sugar level.
How do I know I have Metabolic syndrome?
✅ A waistline of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women (measured across the belly) - abdominal obesity
✅ A blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or higher or are taking blood pressure medications - High blood pressure
✅ A fasting blood glucose (sugar) level greater than 100 mg/dl or are taking glucose-lowering medications - High blood sugar
✅ Diagnosed of fatty liver disease.
✅ A triglyceride level above 150 mg/dl - High triglyceride
✅ A high density lipoprotein (HDL) less than 40 mg/dl (men) or under 50 mg/dl (women) - Low good cholesterol
✅ Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)/hormonal imbalance symptoms.
If you're diagnosed with three or more of these symptoms, then you have Metabolic syndrome.
If I have metabolic syndrome, what health problems might develop?
Obviously, having any one of these risk factors isn't good. But when they're combined, they set the stage for serious problems. These risk factors double your risk of blood vessels and heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. They increase your risk of diabetes by five times.
Consistently high levels of insulin and glucose (inflammation) are linked to many harmful changes to the body, including:
Damage to the lining of coronary and other arteries, a key step toward the development of heart disease or stroke.
Changes in the kidneys' ability to remove salt, leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
An increase in triglyceride levels, resulting in an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
An increased risk of blood clot formation, which can block arteries and cause heart attacks and strokes.
A slowing of insulin production and insulin resistance, which can signal the start of type 2 diabetes, a disease that is in itself associated with an increased risk for a heart attack or stroke.
Uncontrolled diabetes is also associated with complications of the eyes, nerves, and kidneys. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of amputation and blindness.
Fatty liver, which is sometimes associated with inflammation of the liver (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH). If untreated, NASH could lead to cirrhosis and liver failure.
Women with PCOS may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, infertility, acne, high blood pressure, heart problems, missed or irregular periods and endometrial cancer.
With these deadly complications, the good news is that metabolic syndrome can be controlled and reversed, largely with changes to your lifestyle.
Here's the solution:
Weight loss. Weight gain is the major cause of the inflammation therefore removing the excess weight will stop the inflammation and strengthen the immune system.
How do I cut down my weight?
Since obesity is caused by eating too much and moving too little then moving more through exercise or increasing your physical activities and eating less will cut down your weight.
But exercise and diet restrictions can be very challenging for many.
Here's an easier way to achieve your weight loss goals.
Recent research indicates that exercise and calorie restriction activates an enzyme in the body called AMPK (adenosine-monophosphate-activated protein kinase). AMPK is considered as a master switch regulating glucose and lipid (include fats, waxes, oils, hormones) metabolism - breakdown.
When activated, AMPK increases glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation and decreases lipid (fats, waxes, oils, hormones) accumulation in the tissues. It also reduces fat accumulation in the blood.
This reduces your weight and decreases your inflammation level naturally and boosts your immune system for healing.
Here's the short cut….
Researchers confirmed that certain natural compounds such as alpha lipoic acid, resveratrol, berberine and rooibos also activates AMPK.
Using Alpha Lipoic Acid To Activate AMPK
The antioxidant compound alpha lipoic acid (ALA) possesses anti-diabetic and anti-obesity properties by activating AMPK in the skeletal muscle, heart, and endothelium.
Alpha Lipoic Acid treatment significantly reduced body weight gain primarily by decreasing your food intake (suppressing appetite) and improving mitochondrial functions (glucose uptake and protein synthesis) and glutathione levels.
Where do I get Alpha Lipoic Acid?
Meta-Switch Metabolic Enhancer is a weight loss supplement that takes a different approach to weight loss. Meta-Switch ’s core ingredient is Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), a powerful antioxidant that helps promote a healthy metabolism.
